The Fact
Civilisation is making humanity less intelligent, study claims
The Telegraph [UK], 12 Nov 2012
The simplicity of modern life is making us more stupid, according to a
scientific theory which claims humanity may have reached its
intellectual and emotional peak as early as 4,000 BC. Prof Gerald
Crabtree, a developmental biologist at Stanford University, explained in
the Trends in Genetics journal that a mutation in any one of 2,000 to
5,000 particular genes could lower our intellectual and emotional
ability. Our development of intelligence genes “probably occurred in a
world where every individual was exposed to nature’s raw selective
mechanisms on a daily basis,” he said, but the same pressures do not
apply today. “I would wager that if an average citizen from Athens of
1000 BC were to appear suddenly among us, he or she would be among the
brightest and most intellectually alive of our colleagues and
companions, with a good memory, a broad range of ideas, and a
clear-sighted view of important issues,” he said.
